Your 4-day travel guide
Tanabe is where ancient trails meet the sea, and every meal tells a story. You'll wake to the smell of salt air and simmering soy sauce, with the low hum of pilgrims setting off towards forest shrines. This city is the gateway to the Kumano Kodo, but don't rush past it. Here, you can taste umeboshi plums so tart they make your cheeks pucker, soak in oceanside hot springs as the sun dips, and wander quiet temple grounds where time feels slower. For a couple, it's a chance to share simple, profound moments, like watching fishermen haul in the day's catch or finding a hidden torii gate framed by cedars. Pack your comfy shoes and an appetite, we're diving into the soul of Wakayama.

When to Go
The best times to visit Tanabe are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). Spring offers mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and comfortable conditions for walking and outdoor activities. Autumn brings crisp air and beautiful foliage, especially along the Kumano Kodo trails. Summer (July to August) can be hot and humid, with a higher chance of rain, but it's good for beach activities. Winter (December to February) is mild but cooler, with fewer tourists, making it peaceful but some outdoor attractions might be less ideal.
Tanabe is deeply connected to the Kumano Kodo, a network of pilgrimage routes that have been used for over 1000 years. This history infuses the city with a sense of reverence and tradition. Locals are generally reserved but hospitable. When visiting shrines, it's customary to wash your hands at the chozuya (water pavilion) before approaching the main hall. Food culture centers on fresh seafood from the Kumano Sea and umeboshi plums, which are a source of local pride. The pace of life is slower here compared to big cities, so embrace a relaxed attitude. In onsens, remember that bathing is typically gender separated and done nude after washing.
