Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September) offer the most pleasant weather with mild temperatures and fewer crowds than peak summer. Summer (July-August) is warmest but also busiest, while winter can be cold and damp with shorter daylight hours. The museums are indoor attractions that can be visited year-round, but the nature areas are most enjoyable in good weather. Special events at Aviodrome and Bataviawerf often occur in summer months.
Lelystad has a different character from older Dutch cities because it was entirely planned and built on land reclaimed from the IJsselmeer starting in the 1960s. This creates a modern, spacious feel with wide streets and contemporary architecture. Residents take pride in their city's unique origin story and its role in Dutch water management history. The population is diverse, with many young families attracted by the good housing and green spaces. While not as traditionally picturesque as Amsterdam or Utrecht, Lelystad offers a genuine look at modern Dutch living. People are generally friendly and direct in communication, typical of Dutch culture. The city feels safe and orderly, with excellent infrastructure.
