When to Go
The best time to visit Prešov is from late spring to early autumn (May through September). During these months, you'll enjoy mild to warm temperatures, perfect for walking and exploring the city. Days are long, and outdoor cafes are in full swing. Summer (June-August) is the warmest and sunniest, but also sees the most tourists (though crowds are modest compared to Western European capitals). Late spring (May) and early autumn (September) offer pleasant weather with fewer visitors. Winters (December-February) can be cold and snowy, which has its own charm, especially around Christmas markets, but some outdoor activities are less appealing.
Prešov has a calm, unhurried pace. It's a university city, which adds a youthful energy, especially in cafes and bistros. Locals are generally reserved but friendly and helpful if approached. The city has a significant historical Greek Catholic and Orthodox presence, reflected in some of its churches. When visiting churches, modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is a sign of respect, even if not always strictly enforced. Mealtimes are important social occasions. Lunch is the main meal of the day, often eaten between 12:00 and 14:00. Dinner is typically lighter and eaten later, around 19:00 or afterwards. Don't be surprised by the hearty, meat-and-potato based cuisine, it's a staple of the region.
